Kungfupunk
Kungfupunk is a word the studio coined for this game. It is not a historical school and not a synonym for wuxia. The spelling changes on the official site: Kungfupunk in English, 功夫朋克 in Simplified Chinese, 功夫龐克 in Traditional Chinese.
Developer definition
Liang’s 2023 essay is the longest definition in his own voice. The Phantom World is where kung fu, “intricate machines reminiscent of steampunk,” and occult arts meet. He adds “a heavy dose of punk spirit” and calls the art direction Kungfupunk. The examples of popular kung fu he gives in the same essay are Louis Cha, Bruce Lee, Michelle Yeoh, and Donnie Yen.
In the December 2025 Epic interview he says it again, with a wider list of mixtures: Chinese kung fu plus steampunk, cyberpunk, anime, and manga. He calls that mixture a new identity. The two quotations agree on the method, which is collision, and they do not list the same ingredients. Keep both.
Martial arts
The martial half is not a costume on top of a punk setting. The 2023 essay spends its length on why the fights should feel like 1990s films and why the buttons should stay few. The later interview treats kung fu as the channel for the story. If the word is only used for goggles and pipes, it has left Liang’s definition.
Machines and bodies
The machine half is described, not inventoried. Liang says the machines recall steampunk. He does not publish a technology bible on the pages cited here. The English deluxe outfit is called Blood-Steel Form, while the Chinese homepages call the matching deluxe outfit 机械魔躯. That naming split belongs in the glossary. It is a small example of a body being described as both martial and mechanical, and of the languages not choosing one metaphor.
Visual examples
The homepages themselves are the public style sheet: a lone path, folk horror beside wuxia, and the coined word set in the marketing lines. Trailer frames are not reprinted here. A still would show a costume. The sentences above show the claim the costume is asked to carry.
Punk, in this usage, is the studio’s English. It should not be silently replaced with a Chinese political history of the word. The Traditional homepage already made its own choice, 龐克.
